UFC 300: Khamzat Chimaev reveals the reason he turned down fighting Leon Edwards

Amidst the scrutiny faced by UFC president Dana White regarding the perceived dissatisfaction of fans with the UFC 300 card, a notable lineup unfolds. The forthcoming event features Alex PEreira defending his light heavyweight title against Jamahal Hill for the undisputed crown. Weili Zhang is set to defend her Strawweight championship against Xiaonan Yan. Justin Gaethje will defend his BMF title in a clash with Max Holloway. Additional matchups include Charles Oliveira versus Arman Tsarukyan, Jiri Prochazka versus Aleksandar Rakic, and Calvin Kattar against Aljamain Sterling. A discerning eye may note the absence of practicing Muslim fighters in this event, offering a clue to Khamzat Chimaev’s exclusion.

Khamzat Chimaev’s Declination of UFC 300 Opponent Leon Edwards

For those familiar with the tenets of Islam, the endurance of athletes is challenged during Ramadan, a prolonged period of fasting observed by practicing Muslims worldwide. Notably absent from UFC 300 are Khamzat Chimaev, Islam Makhachev, and Belal Muhammad, all adherents of Islam. Chimaev recently elucidated the rationale behind declining a bout against Leon Edwards at UFC 300. His explanation sheds light on why the event may not meet fans’ expectations.

In a conversation with Fight Club Rush MMA, Khamzat responded to inquiries about the purported offer to face Edwards at the event. He conveyed, “It wasn’t 100% certain, but discussions were held. My manager indicated, ‘maybe, maybe not.’ Consequently, I decided… My brother advised me, ‘Not during Ramadan.’ Therefore, we intend to dedicate post-Ramadan time to training and then confront any opponent. I anticipate a return in the summer. Ideally, I wish to compete in Saudi Arabia, but it appears few are eager to face me there. Hence, I await developments and was approached for UFC 300, but I deemed it insufficient time for the 77 kg weight class. A bit more time is required.”
