Dustin Poirier would bet on Max Holloway beating Justin Gaethje at UFC 300

Dustin Poirier

Dustin Poirier refuses to underestimate Max Holloway in his bid to dethrone Justin Gaethje at UFC 300.

Gaethje (25-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) defends his coveted BMF title against the former featherweight champion Holloway (25-7 MMA, 21-7 UFC) on April 13 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas – the title Gaethje secured with a thunderous head-kick knockout of Poirier at UFC 291.

Despite Holloway initially being pegged as the slight underdog against Gaethje, Poirier (29-8 MMA, 21-7 UFC), having faced both fighters on two occasions, is convinced that Holloway possesses the necessary tools to overcome Gaethje.

“I hold both individuals in high regard. They are exceptional fighters. Personally, I would place my wager on Max, given his status as the (under)dog,” remarked Poirier on “The MMA Hour.” “I’ve noticed a considerable number of online voices asserting that ‘Max might be at a size disadvantage.’ However, Max is a substantial figure.

“He and Gaethje likely tip the scales at similar weights. Max is not diminutive. Evaluating his striking prowess, the precision in Max’s timing, his expansive reach, and his remarkable resilience – it’s a toss-up. Yet, if I were a betting person, my money would be on Max.”

Poirier experienced mixed results in his two encounters with Gaethje, claiming a knockout victory in 2018 but succumbing to defeat in their rematch last July at UFC 291. “The Diamond” secured victories over Holloway twice, submitting him in 2012 and outlasting him in a riveting Fight of the Night spectacle to seize the interim lightweight title at UFC 236 in 2019.

He is now poised to thwart the ascent of the emerging contender Benoit Saint-Denis (13-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) when they collide in a five-round co-main event at UFC 299 on March 9 at Kaseya Center in Miami.
